Uzbekistan is a landlocked, like all of Central Asia
Uzbekistan, Heritage Of Central Asia

Uzbekistan is the most ancient republic in Central Asia, a little older than the oldest parts that Kyrgyzstan has. It is a fantastic travel destination, and we arrange tours and accommodation in it, alone and combined with the Kyrgyzstan tours. Uzbekistan is located between the Amu-Darya and the Syr-Darya rivers, which made it an centre of civilization in Central Asia. The Huns and the Tartars had their capital at one time or the other. All their accumulated wealth was put on display here. It also has many cities, important stops on the old (and still existing) Silk Road, including Samarkand which was the capital of Tamerlane, who had the second largest empire of all time. There is an amazing amount of history here. We also have a Map of Uzbekistan on our site.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS There are many travel attractions in Uzbekistan for the tourist. There are about 20 separate good quality tourist destinations. These include the capital Tashkent, Samarkand, Khiva, the mountains in the south, Termiz, Urganch, the Ferghana Valley, and the towns in the Ferghana Valley, namely Ferghana, Andijon, and Namangan. What is true of Kyrgyzstan is true of Uzbekistan also, which is the fact that every visitor here is welcomed by a tourist-friendly establishment and the public which has only recently started seeing outsiders in substantial numbers, though many distinguished visitors have been known to travel here in the past including Marco Polo, Alexander the Great, and Chingiz Khan.

There are exotic bazaars in every town, like in many other parts of Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan bazaars of Osh, Bishkek and Karakol. Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand contain the largest ones, and many tourists travel here to see them. Monuments after monuments are on display everywhere the visitor goes. Trekking in the Ferghana valley, and mountaineering in the Tien Shan are also popular items on tourists' itineraries. The Pamir knot, which is called the roof of the world, is partly in the south-east of Uzbekistan. Tashkent is a modern city with a metro railway and all facilities. The old and the new mix in Samarkand like in no other place. Khiva near Urganch is a fairy-tale like medieval capital and a major tourist attraction.

THE SEASONS There are plenty of seasonal variations in Uzbekistan, and there are opportunities for skiing and winter sports in winter. Winter here is a mild winter except in the mountainous regions which can be snowbound for six months or more. Summer, spring and autumn are pleasant and great for adventure sports like riding camels, motorcycles, or bicycles across long distances. Eco-toursim is also at its peak during summer and spring, although many people prefer to visit during winter

SAMARKAND Samarkand is very ancient. It was the capital of Amir Timur (called Tamerlane in the west), and also the most important capital in Asia for about 2-300 years. It was originally founded 2500 years ago. It was known by various names through its life such as Afrasiab, Marakanda, and Sogd. Today it has a population of 375,000 to 400,000, and it is the second largest in Uzbekistan after Tashkent. The single biggest tourist attraction here is the magnificent Registan square. It is the grand meeting point of six roads. Three magnificent Madrassas (formerly islamic schools) stand here, namely the Ulugbeg, Sherdar and the Tillakari. Registan square has a worthy rival in the form of the complex of Mausoleums of Timur and his sons and grandsons. Another magnificent attraction is the necropolis of Samarkand.

BUKHARA When Alexander the Great passed through Bukhara on his journey, it was already about 1000 years old. This makes it one of the oldest cities of the world. It was founded by ancient Zoroastrians, and was a religious center for Zoroastrians, Buddhists and Muslims in turn. Today it is a modern tourism hub, but there are many remains of the days when it was a great trading centre on the Silk road, though much was destroyed by Chingiz Khan in 1219. One of the major attractions here is the Kalian Minaret which is a 48 metre tall minaret visible from most parts of the city.

A large presence in the city is the Ark fortress. It is claimed by some people that the city was first established by Noah's son, who built the first Ark fortress in the memory of Noah's Ark. There is also a delicate example of Timurid architecture in the form of the Bolo-Khaus mosque. There are countless other examples of fine buildings and squares in this ancient town.

TASHKENT Tashkent is a metropolis of 2.1 million people. It is the largest city in central Asia. It has all facilities that a visitor can expect in a city of this size. One of the popular places in this city is the Chorsu bazaar. It is a bazaar built inside a dome, and has a lot of colourful shops and colourful people, making it a great place for photography. Among the examples of traditional architecture are: The Kukeldash Madrassah (16th century), the Sheikhantaur Ensemble (15th century), the Yunus-Khan Mausoleum (15th century) and the Khazrati-lrnarn Complex (16th century). There are many great statues of heroes of Uzbekistan and many grand squares. There are also several good performances at operas and theatres, often at very low prices.

ENTERTAINMENT There is a lot of entertainment in Uzbekistan. There are many night clubs, bars, restaurants and different entertainments in all large towns. In small towns also there are some bars and discos. Bars are aplenty, and offer a wide range of drinks and prices. The bars are usually open till late at night. Restaurants usually close around midnight. Social drinking is a very common thing in countries of the former Soviet Union. the local people do not get drunk easily. There are some Casinos available for gamblers. Also there are many circuses and cinemas. Concerts, operas and dance halls are there for culture lovers, as are many museums and art galleries.

COUNTRYSIDE Uzbekistan has large areas of grasslands, and some desert area also. The winter landscapes are completely white and remind the viewers of the movie Dr. Zhivago. There are plenty of towns and cities in Uzbekistan, and long empty stretches of highways are not there. There are mountains in the south, and skiing is a popular winter pastime. In the Ferghana valley, all sorts of trekking and eco-tourism is very common among people who travel here.
